Keeping Things Simple

Video CaptureI recently purchased some software to transfer analog video to my mac. I am working on a long term project to move all of our beta, vhs, and 8mm tapes from my family’s early years, to the digital world. I tested out the hardware today by transferring some video I shot awhile back from a old video camera.
The process couldn’t be easier. I ran the program, plugged in the usb device, plugged in the audio video cable, and hit play on the video camera. It instantly showed up on the screen with a button to hit record to capture it. Upon recording about 5 minutes of my golf swing, i stopped the recording which then created a .mp4 file and instantly put it into iTunes for me to watch. I am actually thrilled to see that i did not have to sit there and figure the output settings for hours on end to figure out the best way to record it. It did it all automatically for me, and recorded it in a reasonable resolution of 640×480. I am extremely pleased with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone.

Now for the long journey of transferring countless hours of priceless video. At least i now know the process of moving it will be simple on my part… but it will involve leaving my mac on for hours on end.

Rock Band

PB234694.JPG

I received Rock Band (PS3 version) for my birthday this year. I will have to say it is hands down the best party game ever created. My family and I had SUCH a blast playing this. We played for about 5 hours straight. Playing on a huge 73″ screen with a sound system that almost shatters glass was a perfect fit for this game. We had it turned up very loud and it really felt as if we were playing in a band together.

After coming home and playing at home, i will have to say it is a lot more fun to play it REALLY loud. Unfortunately i live in an apartment and cannot blast it as loud. I played today with a friend and we pissed some neighbors off (oops!) so i have to tone it down until we can purchase a house and dedicate part of the basement to a gaming area.

Check out more pictures on my flickr.

Review:

The multi-player aspect of Rock Band kills Guitar Hero III. You feel much more like a team when you play since if a teammate does bad during a song and fails, you can bring them back in by playing well. Playing online is also a lot better than Guitar Hero III, you can have more than one person playing an instrument on the system and then hop online. Its very easy to get 4 people together that way and rock out to some songs.

The difficulty level of Rock Band seems a little bit less of that in Guitar Hero III (guitar vs guitar). Expert is comparable to some of the end hard songs in Guitar Hero III, although some of the downloaded Metallica songs had me stumped on Hard but i think this speaks for the majorty of the in-game songs.

To sum it up, I you are looking for a single player game i would stick to Guitar Hero III. It seems like the single player for Rock Band isn’t as good - unless you want to play just the drums (which are amazing btw). Its still a blast but the real fun is playing multi-player and i’m sure a lot of people out there don’t want to drop $170 to play drums. On the other hand, if you are looking for the ultimate party game and will be playing with 2 or more people a majority of the time, this game is a must buy!

iPhone Review

iPhone iPhone

I purchased an iPhone about a week and a half ago. The reason i have waited so long to write the review is because i wanted to give myself enough time to really use it to see my likes and dislikes.

Screen Size & Quality
The screen quality and size of the phone is amazing. I can’t get over how crisp it looks. It really makes the whole experience of the gadget amazing.

Physical Size
I thought when purchasing it that it would be a huge difference to carry it around in my pocket, I was very mistaken. The thinness of the iPhone is about half that of my prior phone, the LG Fusic, so it feels the same, if not more comfortable in my pocket.

iPod
My favorite feature of the iPhone is its obvious iPod integration. I have held off on purchasing an iPod for the longest time, so this is my first experience with having one all to myself. I will have to say i love it. I have collected album art for all of my music so it displays nicely. It has been so nice to not have to keep my work computer’s music in sync with my computer at home. Now i can just listen to all of it via my iPhone with no worries. Soon i will be getting an AUX port installed in my car so i can listen to my tunes in there also.

The video features of the iPhone are amazing. Watching a movie on it isn’t bad at all considering the size of the screen. Its actually enjoyable to watch unlike other portable video players i have seen.

Memory Size
This is something i thought could have been bigger, i thought that 8GB wouldn’t even be enough for my music since i have so much of it, but i have only filled it up about 75% of the way. I have been in the habit of putting full CDs on it just incase someone i am with likes a song on a CD that i don’t like. I have just been rating the songs 1-5 as i listen to them, which is just the touch of the screen to do, and my plans are to just remove all the 1 star songs if i run out of room.

Internet & Wifi
A surprise to me is that AT&T’s wireless internet is not as slow as i thought it was going to be. It is definitely not stellar by all means, but it gets the job done. The feature of connecting to Wifi networks in the area works great. I have it automatically prompt me if a wireless network is in the area while surfing and have the option to connect to it. Almost everywhere i go has wifi so it works out very well.

Google Maps
I have been using google maps mobile since it first came out so this is nothing new to me. The features that i never had in the past but now have are bookmarked locations, and the ability to search your contacts for addresses automatically by typing. The interface in general is much easier to use than that on my old phone.

Mail
I have been using gmail since it first launched back in 2004 so its great that they have this as an option on the phone. Unfortunately gmail does not offer IMAP as an option so you cannot keep your mailbox in sync. On my old phone google released a java application that connects directly to your box to manage it. On the iPhone you are unable to do this. This was my biggest problem at first but the features of being able to open any attachment, word docs, spreadsheets, pdfs, and many other things greatly outweighs this problem.

Camera & Photos
This is something i have not used a lot but i must say that it takes EXCELLENT pictures from what i have seen so far. I added some pictures to the camera just to test out browsing photos on it. I must say, with the size of the screen it is very nice to be able to view and show pictures to people.

YouTube
This is something i have not really used to much yet as i have spent more time in the internet browser. From my experiences however, it seems like this feature works very well.

Games
Where the heck are the games? Well from reading online, it seems as if Apple is brewing something big in the games department. I am very intrigued to see how they make use of multi-touch and games. In the meatime, i will spend my time playing games online.

SMS
The only cool thing with this as it acts like a chat, so you ca easily see your previous texts in a conversation format. This is great feature as it gives it more of an instant message chat feeling.

So my overall experience with this phone has been amazing. I feel like they will improve the features of the phone again and again as they do with all of there other products. I am looking forward to the future of the iPhone and will be paying close attention to following it! I would recommend this phone to anyone who is looking for a new iPod and would like to carry around just one gadget to do-it-all.
