A good thing to do is to make your bedroom your primary charging station for your phones. Even if it doesn't need charging, it will create a habit of having the phone in the bedroom at night. You never think about it until something like this happens and the phone is across the house, which might as well be across the state.

I'm surprised and appalled that the cop didn't identify himself. And even after you called them and found out who it was, only thing I would have done differently than you would have been to see the cops badge before opening the door.
